The Ultimate Waterfront Property (Hint: It’s a Lighthouse) Is the Week’s Hottest House

Waterfront property commands a big premium. It’s also seriously popular. We usually see homes along the water float to the top when we count down the most popular properties on realtor.com®.

But this week takes the trend to the extreme: The most popular home is surrounded by water, water everywhere.

And if you want to be technical about it, it’s not really a home in any traditional sense. It’s a real-life lighthouse! Sitting in the Chesapeake Bay 3 miles from shore, the structure is waiting for a buyer with $249,000 to ride in on a wave of speculation and make it a home.

It won’t be easy. The interior needs a massive overhaul. The exterior needs help. The light still shines, though—the Coast Guard sees to that. And from a logistics perspective, the renovations will be … challenging. However, when the work is done and all five levels of living space are in order, you can guide the rest of your life into place from the deck of your very own lighthouse.

In addition to the lighthouse, you also clicked on a handful of estates with acres to spare, a foreclosed historic home in Illinois, and one of the most expensive homes in the Granite State.

Follow us as we illuminate the way through the rest of this week’s most popular homes.

10. 25067 W Tamarack Dr, Wauconda, IL

Price: $579,000
Why it’s here: Listing agent Connie Antoniou was effusive in her praise for this four-bedroom home about an hour outside Chicago.

“You’re getting a kitchen you’d find in a $2 million listing in a home priced below $600,000,” Antoniou told us. Buyers are lined up to make offers on the home, she added, because they “can’t believe the size and quality of house for the current asking price.”

3. 84 Canaan Back Rd, Barrington, NH

Price: $9,950,000
Why it’s here: While it’s not the most expensive home in New Hampshire, this new listing has landed in the state’s top five. Also called Coot Farm, the property includes a massive mansion, a three-bedroom caretaker home, a two-bedroom rental unit, a former dairy barn, and a barn with workshops.

2. 876 W State St, Jacksonville, IL

Price: $197,000
Why it’s here: Currently in foreclosure, this historic home needs a restoration-minded buyer to come to the rescue. Listing agent Scott Eoff told us he’s shown the home to a few interested buyers, but he thinks it’ll require at least an additional $100,000 in improvements to bring the place back to life. Built in 1854 and located in the city’s historic district, the home has the right bones. Now it just needs a deep-pocketed buyer to flesh out the project.

1. Wolf Trap Lighthouse, Mathews County, VA

Price: $249,000
Why it’s here: It’s a lighthouse. You can buy a lighthouse and live in it! What else do you need to know?

Well … it’s not exactly in turn-key condition. Located in Chesapeake Bay about 3 miles from shore, the old lighthouse needs buyers who can keep their head above water while restoring the place.

Listing agent Laura Pierce clued us in to the logistics involved. A buyer will likely need to anchor a barge nearby with materials and supplies for the restoration. The construction will also need to abide by historic standards—the exterior of the lighthouse has to retain its red-brick charm. However, buyers can configure the 1,500 square feet of interior space any way they desire. The light is still functioning and maintained by the Coast Guard, but there’s no foghorn to be found.

The buyers will also acquire a lot on the mainland to park a boat. According to Pierce, the lot could potentially be developed.
