Former White Stripes frontman Jack White is clear on his preference for vintage in many facets of his life. From throwback vinyl to sublime suits, the boss of Third Man Records has a distinct bent toward the classics.

So we weren’t shocked when we found out the guitar god recently plunked down a wad of cash for a classic Mid-Century Modern home in Kalamazoo, MI.

And White doesn’t intend to live in this vintage gem—he’s just going to visit it occasionally and use it as a songwriting retreat.

“It’s a place I can go and write songs and shake up my environment,” he said in an article in The New Yorker. White currently lives in the country music capital of Nashville, but he grew up in the Detroit area.

It would seem White has exceptional taste in real estate, as he purchased this special house sight unseen. Known as the Kirkpatrick House, it was designed by famed modernist architect George Nelson, and completed in 1958. More recently, it was lovingly restored by its previous owner, Dave Corner.

The 3,500-square-foot home on 2.5-acre wooded lot was on the market for $450,000. White paid $510,000 for it, but for design aficionados and vintage collectors, it’s a bargain.

The above-asking price includes Corner’s collection of vintage Herman Miller furnishings, as well as letters between the Kirkpatrick family (for whom the house was built and named) and Nelson during the three-year design process. Also included in the price were photos, drawings, plans, and publications that featured the house when it was first completed.

The rectangular structure was designed with a two-story steel frame, a flat roof, and huge windows. The interior features brick and wood-paneled walls, with the original panels of Mondrian-esque primary colors still intact. It also has tiled, hardwood, and carpeted floors.

White, who is known for his wildly creative guitar work as a solo artist, with the White Stripes, the Raconteur,s and Dead Weather, began his professional life as an upholsterer’s apprentice, and then went on to open Third Man Upholstery. He told The New Yorker he used to drive around the city looking for discarded furniture, and sometimes he found Nelson-designed pieces to restore.

His most recent record, “Jack White Acoustic Recordings 1998–2016,” was released September and zoomed to the top of the vinyl sales charts in the U.S.
