Could a Fire-Damaged Texas Tear-Down Be This Week’s Most Popular Home?

We’ve seen our fair share of fixer-uppers in our weekly look at the most popular properties on realtor.com®. Places with potential offered at a discounted price often attract a crazy amount of interest among our readers.

But this week’s most popular home was something else entirely. This sprawling place isn’t exactly a fixer-upper—it’s a complete tear-down. Located in the Texas town of McKinney, the fire-damaged home hit the market just over a week ago with a deeply discount price. It doesn’t appear as if the home can be saved, but maybe that’s what’s so darn appealing to potential buyers. The property is already pending sale and will likely be razed in favor of a new home.

For the noninvestor—we get it—it’s a chance to gawk at pictures of the devastating effects of fire and smoke. (Thankfully, no one was hurt in the February blaze.)

Readers also clicked on the mansions of a few notable names, an Ohio mansion with a private lake, and a cool camelback home in New Orleans.

While you ponder what would lead a house to be compared with a camel, please scroll down for the full list of this week’s most popular properties.

10. 2809 Highcrest Rd, Rockford, IL

Price: $149,900
Why it’s here: It’s a repeat offender! Last week’s 10th-place finisher holds down the 10 spot again this week. It must be the heart-shaped tub inspiring all the love for this fixer-upper.

9. 123 Summit Ln, Hendersonville, TN

Price: $8,750,000
Why it’s here: It’s the home of singer Kelly Clarkson. If possible, a buyer should try to negotiate the estate’s rustic and eclectic decor into the final sales price. Are the furnishings worth going to the mattresses over? We must have the horse saddle stools in the downstairs bar! Trust us, this is no Beautiful Disaster.

8. 5701 Camp St, New Orleans, LA

Price: $1,185,000
Why it’s here: Listing agent Elizabeth McNulty told us there are few turnkey homes at this price in the ultradesirable Audubon neighborhood. She’s had multiple offers on the home, which is a “camelback”—a style unique to the city where a two-story addition was added to the back of the home but doesn’t detract from the historic facade.

New Orleans, LANew Orleans, LA

7. 308 Sea Cliff Ave, San Francisco, CA

Why it’s here: It’s the oh-so-popular home of Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett. We can safely say this mansion rocks.

6. 509 Cedar St, Forney, TX

Price: $299,000
Why it’s here: Last sold in 2012 for $149,000, this adorable four-bedroom home was completely renovated, and the results are fantastic. The home’s open floor plan and spacious rooms are a perfect spot for a family to put down roots.

5. 9437 Penn Rd, Leesburg, OH

Price: $2,500,000
Why it’s here: This mansion midway between Cincinnati and Columbus “takes your breath away,” according to listing agent Sharon Packer. Situated on 95 acres of land, it’s a hunter’s delight as quail and bucks can often be found roaming the spread, Packer said. There’s also a 12-acre private lake, a place to land a helicopter, hand-milled woodwork throughout the home, and a pub-style bar on the home’s bottom level. It’s a place where everybody knows your name!

4. 3173 Blue Cypress Ln, Wellington, FL

Price: $3,250,000
Why it’s here: Could this be the home of heiress Athina Onassis? Located in the nation’s top equestrian market, it seems like a credible candidate, but questions remain about who owns this four-bedroom house.

Why it’s here: This beachfront mansion on Maui just landed on the market last week. With over 13,000 square feet of living space, it has island vibes to spare.

2. Undisclosed address, Savannah, GA

Why it’s here: It’s celebrity chef Paula Deen‘s mansion. Known as Riverbend, the home had its price recently sliced by over a million bucks.

1. 8116 Yellowstone Dr, McKinney, TX

Price: $150,000
Why it’s here: The site of a fire in February, this shell of a home is offered as a tear-down opportunity for investors. On one hand, the chance to gawk created a storm of interest from real estate rubberneckers. However, the place also attracted a number of interested buyers.

The property is already pending sale after a little over a week on the market. Fire-damaged or not, in a city where the median list price is $395,000, the chance to buy a buildable lot for a fraction of the cost was almost too good to be true.
