Luxury homes can take many over-the-top forms. (Trump Tower, anyone?) And yes, we know tacky McMansions still lure a certain strain of deep-pocketed buyers. But we’ve also noted an uptick in luxury eco-friendly homes—designed for high-end buyers who choose to tread more lightly on the earth without sacrificing their creature comforts.

Eco-friendly elements for new homes can include everything from solar panels to water-saving bathroom fixtures. But let’s be clear—green design doesn’t mean living in a yurt or giving up hot water. A prime example of gilded and guilt-free living is this new home on the market in L.A.’s posh Melrose Village, seen above.

The modern stunner features five bedrooms, 5.5 baths, an open atrium, four gas fireplaces, and a chef’s kitchen with Miele appliances.

The contemporary residence also includes exterior water capture to recycle rainwater, low-flow toilets and fixtures, energy-efficient LED lighting, a smart home system to control lighting and AC, reclaimed wood, a Tesla charger, and even artificial grass.

Mayer Dahan of Dahan Properties, the builder, says constructing green homes offers “an opportunity to get ahead of the times and possibly give people what they need before they know they need it.”

Green building design is everywhere, including in luxury housing that will, well, cost you a lot of green. Here are a few other examples where luxury and eco-friendly living intersect.
