Pierre Koenig home in Brentwood

Mid-Century Modern aficionados will go mad for this house! For the first time since legendary architect Pierre Koenig built it, his personal residence in Brentwood, CA, is on the market. This slice of architectural awesomeness is listed for $3.8 million.

We knew it was a special property when listing agents Josh and Matt Altman, of Altman Brothers Residential and Commercial, were excited. They’ve seen plenty of SoCal stunners, but this place stands out.

“This is an incredibly unique property,” Josh says. “As one of the most photographed and published homes in the country, it’s been meticulously restored exactly and painstakingly by Pierre Koenig’s stepchildren, Barry and Thomas Kaufman, over the past two-and-a-half years, as a tribute to the famed architect’s original vision.”

In keeping with the vision, the Kaufman brothers even restored Koenig’s glass-walled architectural studio, complete with drafting tables and Koenig’s desk.

Koenig received his architecture degree from the University of Southern California, then began private practice in 1952, building distinctively Mid-Century Modern homes on the West Coast. He’s responsible for several Case Study Homes, which are the most-photographed and chronicled modern homes of the era.

He was also a professor at the USC School of Architecture from 1964 until his death from leukemia in 2004. He was 78.

Built in 1985, Koenig’s three-story, 3,000-square-foot private residence features an open floor plan. The steel-and-glass structure has rooms that flow into one another or are divided by glass walls and sliding panels. There are three bedrooms and 2.5 baths.

Other living spaces include a parlor, music room, media/family room, open kitchen, interior courtyard with fountain, and numerous decks.

And then there are the unique architectural features, highlighted by a three-story atrium, accessed by remarkable glass staircases and illuminated by full-height clerestory windows.

“One of its many fascinating features includes the clerestory, which was built with exceptional acoustics and the ability to bring music into all parts of the house because the Koenigs were avid lovers of music,” Josh says.

This one-of-a-kind property is a testament to Koenig’s vision and will likely find a buyer who shares that vision in short order.
