Magnificent $48M Manhattan Mansion Is Our Most Expensive New Listing

Atterbury Mansion

Located next door to the former Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, this week’s most expensive new listing on realtor.com® could be considered a work of art unto itself.

The recently restored Atterbury Mansion is back on the market for $48 million. Built in 1901, the historic townhouse was named for its architect, Grosvenor Atterbury. It’s also part of a larger condo development on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

“It’s a townhouse with condo privileges. I don’t think there’s anything like that in New York,” says listing agent Richard J. Steinberg of Douglas Elliman. “It’s just magnificent.”

The compound, which had once been planned as a museum expansion, was sold five years ago when the Whitney moved downtown. (The building now houses the contemporary wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.)

Instead, the building interiors were gutted and the exterior facades were preserved to create a series of condos, along with the crown jewel: The four-floor, 10,888-square-foot, single-family home.

The mansion was originally built for banker Julian Wainwright Robbins and his wife, Sarah Robbins (niece of Cornelius Vanderbilt).

The renovated property was purchased by Russian billionaire businessman Alexei Kuzmichev just over a year ago, according to the New York Post.

The deal included a second unit next door to the mansion, and Kuzmichev apparently planned to combine the two dwellings into one massive abode. He shelled out $57.5 million for the pair of properties.

However, the two addresses were never linked, and both are back on the market as separate properties. The other (smaller) unit returned to the market in March for $16.25 million.

The agent confirmed that the owners—who completely restored the place—never moved in, and are presently living outside the country. He wouldn’t confirm their names.

The 33-foot-wide building with four floors has five beds, five baths, and three half-baths. Each floor is equipped with public and private elevators, and is accessible through the lobby or its own private entrance.

The home’s entry foyer features Chambord limestone and polished plaster, and wide-plank white oak floors run throughout the home.

The stunning living room boasts a 12-foot-high ceiling along with south-facing floor-to-ceiling arched windows. Off the first floor is a private terrace. A massive chef’s kitchen includes top-of-the-line appliances, a marble island, and stone countertops. There’s also a media room, library, and family room.

The building’s amenities include concierge service, a doorman, a super, and a handyman, according to the agent.

Surely, the next buyer will appreciate this masterpiece enough to make it a permanent home.
