In 2003, the world got a glimpse of the lives of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame and her husband, former diplomat Joe Wilson. Wilson publicly questioned George W. Bush’s justification for the Iraq War, and a Bush administration official responded by telling a journalist that Wilson’s wife was secretly a spy.

It was a story primed for Hollywood, of a high-powered, well-connected couple secretly gathering intelligence for the U.S. government. Hearings and criminal proceedings regarding Plame’s outing stretched in 2007 and dominated headlines during Bush’s second term as president.

Plame resigned from the CIA, and she and Wilson eventually moved to a wealthy neighborhood in Santa Fe, NM. They’re now putting their Santa Fe home on the market for $2.1 million.

The 4,609-square-foot home has four bedrooms and 5.5 baths. Built in 1997, it’s located on a 2.7-acre lot, down a private road and inside a gated compound.

The home is quintessentially Southwestern, with exposed wooden beams, white plastered walls, colorful tile accents, brick floors, and lots of natural light. Most of the rooms have views of the nearby Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range.

A winding driveway leads to a pair of antique doors that open to the courtyard, which has a fountain, a pair of espaliered trees, and the first of 11 fireplaces placed throughout the home’s bedrooms, sitting areas, and outdoor spaces.

Inside, the home is naturally lit by glass doors and skylights in virtually every room. The living room has a tall ceiling, floor-to-ceiling bookcase with ladder, fireplace, and bank of glass doors opening to a backyard patio. The chef’s kitchen has custom cabinets, high-end appliances, a wine refrigerator, and island.

Elsewhere, there’s a one-bedroom, 967-square-foot guesthouse and three-car garage, with eco-friendly features such as radiant heating and evaporative cooling, a 14,000-gallon rainwater catchment system, and solar panels.

After she left the CIA, Plame built a second career as an author and speaker. She now sits on the boards of a handful of private companies and nonprofits, and works with the Santa Fe Institute, a science-focused think tank.

Plame and Wilson’s Hollywood-esque story eventually did get made into a movie, “Fair Game,” starring Naomi Watts and Sean Penn.
