No Reserve! Suzanne Somers’ Palm Springs Compound Up for Auction

If three’s company, five must be a full-on party. And five just happens to be the number of villas included in Suzanne Somers‘ romantic desert compound in Palm Springs, CA, which is currently up for auction with no reserve.

Most recently listed at $14.5 million, the 70-acre retreat was purchased by Somers and her husband, Alan Hamel, in 1977—the same year Somers was cast as ditzy Chrissy Snow on the hit sitcom “Three’s Company.”

It may seem risky to sell a valuable property to the highest bidder, considering the winning bid could be $14 million, $14,000, or $14.

However, Cindy Jones of Concierge Auctions—the firm handling the sale—says they sell 20 to 30 high-end homes around the world each month and no buyer ever walks away with a mansion for pocket change. The company does a targeted, intense marketing push for a month, and winds up with five or six pre-qualified buyers bidding on the property.

Jones says it’s a quick way to make the best deal on a one-of-a-kind property. And since Somers’ desert oasis has been on and off the market for about seven years now, you can see why the finality of an auction is attractive.

The five villas, on four levels of terrain, have a total of eight bedrooms, nine full baths, and two half-baths.

While a funicular will whisk you up and down the mountain to the main buildings, there’s also auto access on a private, gated road. The villas are also connected by walkways and paths for electric carts. The carts, by the way, are included in the sale, as is most of the furniture, including a vintage carousel.

The main residence has a formal dining room, a two-room kitchen, and a wine cellar that can hold 5,000 bottles.

The master suite, which is in another villa, features a sleeping chamber with an outdoor shower, as well as a bathroom with a heated soaking tub overlooking the city lights below. In addition, the master suite features his-and-her offices and closets (“his” closet doubles as a safe room). There’s also a separate dressing room with closets that were installed by master craftsmen from Europe.

The most famous building in the compound is the rock house built by architect Albert Frey. It sits against the mountainside, above the main residence, and has a two room-suite with walls of glass, a fireplace, Balinese garden doors, a bathroom, claw-foot tub and rock shower, and a spa.

Outdoor features include a covered veranda and bar, rock-lined pool and spa, living room, dining room, and amphitheater. You’ll also find numerous fireplaces, fire pits, decks, and entertainment pavilions.

“It’s one of the biggest land holdings in Palm Springs,” says Jones. There’s been an exceptional amount of interest since the auction was announced at the beginning of the month, she adds. She expects the bidding to be brisk on Jan. 31.

Somers, 71, and Hamel, 81, were married in 1977, the same year they bought the Palm Springs property. More recently, Somers has hosted two TV talk shows and competed on “Dancing With the Stars” in 2015.
