Built in the style of Anne Boleyn’s childhood castle, a historic mansion in Wisconsin recently landed on the market for $10.5 million, making it the state’s most expensive listing.

Known as Minnewoc, the property is also called Bullen’s Castle after its first owner. It’s located in Oconomowoc, which is 30 miles west of downtown Milwaukee.

Listed with Jonathan Spheeris of Coldwell Banker Elite, the 16,000-square-foot property hugs Oconomowoc Lake and includes 800 feet of private shoreline.

The home was built in 1892 by malt tycoon George Bullen to resemble Hever Castle in Kent, England. The resemblance remains uncanny, but a renovation three years ago featured a major addition to the fortresslike home.

When the current owners bought the property in 2013 for $2.6 million, it was only 10,000 square feet. Since then, 6,000 square feet of living space have been added. The renovations also transformed this historic gem into a smart home and included the installation of solar panels.

The 21-room estate has six bedrooms and 10 baths, making it ideal for entertaining. There’s the kitchen with its dark wood cabinetry and large island topped with chocolate-colored marble. The Sub-Zero & Wolf stainless-steel range with its signature red knobs is a dream for any aspiring chef.

Glamorous red chandeliers in the dining room are paired with a gorgeous fireplace and mantel, custom wood beams, and crown molding. The room’s leaded-glass windows bring to mind an English cottage, and the home theater with wine cellar ensures a glass of red is always within reach.

Elegant details include the sitting room with atrium, bedrooms with sunken ceilings, and many bay windows overlooking the lake. A couple of bathrooms are decked out in marble and feature soaking tubs.

While the recent updates have brought the castle into the 21st century, the 19th-century home still retains its regal bearing. Now all it needs is a queen to make her way home.
