7 Homes Whose Halloween Decorations Are Impressively Over-the-Top

halloween-decor-over-the-top

If there’s any time of the year to go all-out with your home decorations, it’s Halloween. It’s socially acceptable—even celebrated—to adorn your front yard with giant spiderwebs, fake tombstones, and carved pumpkins. But some homeowners like to push the envelope and take their love of Halloween-themed decorations to jaw-dropping, spine-tingling, and sometimes theatrical heights.

Below, in no particular order, we’ve rounded up the most impressive displays; because when it comes to decorating for Allhallows Eve, there’s no such thing as overkill.

1. Don’t fear the (Grim) Reaper halloween decorationsA giant Grim Reaper keeps an eye on this quaint Chicago neighborhood.

Death literally has its hands all over this house in the Lincoln Square neighborhood of Chicago. The homeowner, Kevin Byrne, hand-carved and painted the 6-foot foam skull and skeleton hands.

According to his website, he wanted to take advantage of his home’s flat roof and parapet wall, and ended up creating this statue that looks like it’s standing 45 feet tall.

2. ‘Star Wars’ AT-AT walker halloween decorationsThe empire strikes back—on this guy’s front lawn.

Who needs pumpkins and cobwebs when you can create a two-story replica AT-AT walker from “The Empire Strikes Back”?

Although the “Star Wars” franchise doesn’t scream “Allhallows Eve,” homeowner Nick Meyer constructed a massive display in his front yard that looks like something straight out of the opening scenes of Episode V. But Meyer is not a superfan, but a hobbyist. He told Cleveland.com that he “just thought it would be neat to build a walker.”

Neighbors have come to expect eye-catching Halloween decorations on Meyer’s lawn for the past six or seven years. Last year, he built a replica cabin from the original “Friday the 13th” movie, and in previous years he’s transformed his home into a pirate ship and a mausoleum.

3. House of 3,000 pumpkins halloween decorationsThis Kenova, WV, house displays about 3,000 pumpkins each year.

The glow of over 3,000 jack-o’-lanterns surrounding a historic home on Beech Street in Kenova, WV, has been a Halloween destination for nearly 30 years.

Ric Griffith, the homeowner and a former mayor of Kenova, coordinates the brilliant display with the help of hundreds of volunteers who carve the pumpkins, according to Atlas Obscura.

4. Full-grown Transformers halloween decorationsFull-size Transformers take over the front lawn of this Cleveland home.

Shape-shifting robots aren’t exactly scary, but they do play up the shock-and-awe factor that’s intrinsic in any Halloween display. A Cleveland couple built replicas based on the characters from the popular “Transformers” action movies, according to Cleveland.com. The decorations were made out of wood and foam, and the tallest robot, Megatron, stands 22 feet tall and took six months to build.

5. Ghouls and dolls halloween decorationsSome people like to embrace the sinister side of Halloween.

Want to really freak out your neighbors? Just hang dozens of baby dolls in your front yard and watch as people make an effort to steer clear. Solicitors and unwanted guests will never set foot near your place again!

Creepy baby dolls don’t require as much effort to install as, say, a 22-foot robot, but they turn heads just the same.

Something this macabre works during the Halloween season, but if the homeowners leave it up past October, people might start to suspect something sinister is actually going on.

6. Call the exterminator halloween decorationsWe’re guessing the homeowners don’t have arachnophobia.

Under any other circumstances, we’d say these homeowners have a big problem on their hands. But in the month of October, a home overtaken by giant spiders looks downright festive. A house covered in oversize eight-legged freaks is either the coolest or the most disturbing display ever, depending on how you feel about spiders.

7. UF-Oh no! halloween decorationsThese creative earthlings staged a flying saucer crash landing on their lawn.

Let us not forget the role that extraterrestrials play in the spooky landscape of Halloween horrors. In a display clearly inspired by Area 51, Stan Munro of Syracuse, NY, staged the crash landing of a flying saucer—alien included. Munro, an international toothpick artist, has been creating elaborate Halloween home decorations since 2005, according to Syracuse.com.

Props to Munro for putting in the little details that really sell the display: the smoke rising from the spacecraft, crime scene tape, and tree branches lopped off during the crash.
