As recently as a year ago, HGTV star Drew Scott never dreamed he’d be shooting two shows and planning a wedding at the same time.
Yet here he is: a finalist on “Dancing With the Stars” while working with his fiancée, Linda Phan, to put the finishing touches on the Los Angeles home he and his brother Jonathan will renovate on the spin-off show “Property Brothers at Home: Drew’s Honeymoon House.”
The house Scott and Phan bought for $2.3 million is located less than 10 minutes from CBS Studios, where “DWTS” is shot. Drew can easily waltz from the studio to check on his brother’s progress.
Agent Bruce Walker of Rodeo Realty—who represented the sellers in the March transaction—thinks the family-friendly location of the house was a main selling point. It’s in a neighborhood where the homes are stately and the lawns are rolling and green. Besides the locale, the size of the lot, the historic style of the house, and its big potential for a remodel were big pluses.
“The area has an East Coast vibe,” says Walker, noting that it stands out among the ’60s and ’70s styles in the Hollywood Hills as well as the brand-new spec homes in Beverly Hills.

It really is a ‘fixer-upper’When a home’s listing description says, “Bring your developers, home buyers, or speculators” and “Endless possibilities for development or remodel,” you know there’s work to be done.
The home was built in 1921 and has had only two owners. Local legend says that members of the Van de Kamp bakery family were behind the home’s origins, and that the home stayed in the family for decades.
Judging from the pictures, the Scotts and Phan have a big challenge ahead of them.

It cost $2.3 millionThe price tag is high for a fixer-upper. And it is.
However, the home was listed for $2.5 million, so the couple negotiated a decent deal. The home is located in the “Greater Wilshire” area, where the median sales price is $1,210,000 and the median listing price is $1,867,000.
Sizing it upAdvertised at 3,442 square feet, there’s an additional 967 square feet on the third floor not included in the official assessment.
When the couple purchased the place, it had five bedrooms and four baths. When work is completed, that configuration will likely change. The lot is about a quarter of an acre, and it has a flat, grassy backyard—ample room for a small pool, or the unique water feature Walker says he’s heard that Drew hopes to install.

Charming original features they might want to keepThe Tudor-style home comes with a Batchelder fireplace hearth, original moldings, hardwood floors, and beautiful woodwork.
There’s also an interesting and well-crafted staircase. While the Scotts are likely to change the original floor plan, the charm of some original features were part of what attracted their interest to begin with. So some of those features will likely get polished and refurbished rather than replaced.

Some things will never changeThis neighborhood is in a Historical Preservation Overlay Zone. The designation means buyers can’t change the style of the front of the house, and a remodel has to be overseen by a representative of the City of Los Angeles.
The designation may seem like a hurdle for buyers who specialize in making changes, but the city regulations have kept the neighborhood lovely and traditional, explains Walker.
It’s in a swanky neighborhoodHancock Park/Windsor Square is one of L.A.’s most established luxury enclaves, full of large, well-preserved homes dating to the Roaring ’20s. The Wilshire Country Club is located there, as is the residence of the Los Angeles British Consul-General and the Marlborough Private School, one of L.A.’s most elite girls’ schools.
