Currently listed for $7 million, a golf course–adjacent estate in Birmingham is Alabama’s most expensive home on the market.
This 12,800-square-foot home has just two (huge!) bedrooms, but the true value is in the other rooms of the house, which are full of art and antiques.
The homeowners custom-built this estate from the ground up to suit their lifestyle. Nearly all of the accessories and accents were designed for the home or purchased as antiques, including a fireplace mantel in the living room that belonged to writer W. Somerset Maugham.

There are two studies and libraries on the main floor, private terraces, five fireplaces, and a workout room. The finished basement features a second kitchen, wine cellar, home theater, and billiard room. There’s also a guesthouse and an artist studio.
Listing agent Pamela Ausley believes the homeowners put at least $10 million into the property but are choosing to sell it for less than that amount because they’ve decided to relocate.
“They keep it fabulously. It is meticulous. It is more than move-in ready—everything about it is perfect,” says Ausley. “But there’s nothing else to build, so I think [the owner’s] creative spirit moves him on.”
Outdoors, there’s a spacious flagstone patio, pool and pool house with bar, and fountains and sculptures. Wrought-iron fencing surrounds fruit trees and a vegetable garden, and the meadow across the street features bees.

“There’s a lot of beautiful houses, but they don’t have this much access to the outdoors,” says Ausley. “We don’t have streetlights in Shoal Creek so you can really see the stars when you sit out there by the fire pit.”
The Shoal Creek neighborhood and this estate both abut the invitation-only Shoal Creek Country Club. However, the trees surrounding this property protect the home from prying eyes and stray golf balls.
The gated neighborhood also offers stables and riding trails, fishing ponds, and community events. “You really will know every neighbor,” says Ausley. “It’s kind of like going back in time.”
Shoal Creek, which had faced criticism for its noninclusive membership policies in the ’90s, will be hosting the 2018 USGA U.S. Women’s Open. The home is perfect for a golf enthusiast or anyone looking for a private luxury escape.
