Scottsdale, AZ, a suburb just north of Phoenix, is no stranger to modern architecture. After all, Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter retreat, Taliesin West, is located in the city.
Even so, a new listing has captured the attention of design-lovers everywhere. On the market since late February for $2.7 million, this modern manse is the lone Arizona project from Lake|Flato, a sustainable-architecture firm.
“They are kind of a big deal,” says Scott Jarson, of Jarson & Jarson Real Estate, of Lake|Flato. Lest you think this is merely a design plopped down in the desert, the three-bedroom, four-bath, 4,000-square-foot home was carefully adapted to the environment.
“They’re known for their regional modernism,” says Jarson, including using local indigenous materials, like the mesquite wood in this home. Natural stone pavers, natural rusting steel with copper details, and stucco were also employed, as well as modern materials like steel and glass.
The interiors of the home have graced the pages of design magazines, featuring the broad overhangs that shade the house from harsh sunlight, the Venetian-style wall finishes, light woods, and low ceilings for a minimalist and light vibe, the steel-pivot doors that open from the kitchen onto the patio, and the open layout.

The views—of a golf course and mountain range—through the home’s many walls of windows are just as enticing. “They really nailed it for how they positioned the home on the site,” says Jarson. The architects made ample use of the lot size and offer up plenty of options for kicking back al fresco. “The house literally doubles its size with outdoor patios,” according to the agent.
An outdoor pool wrapped in weathering steel and with an embedded soaking tub is “the architect’s take on an infinity-edge pool,” says Jarson. A lowered firepit is an ideal outdoor-entertaining spot.
Dividing their time between Portland, OR, and Scottsdale, the current owners use this as a winter home. They are the second family to own the home. Jarson thinks the next owners will be drawn to the designer property—and appreciate that it is under 5,000 square feet. “We’re seeing (buyers) who want higher detail, unique design in a smaller footprint that is easier to maintain,” says Jarson.
It could also be a great second home. “It’s the perfect package for people to fly in, spend three or four weeks, and enjoy all the world-class golf and spa resorts (in Scottsdale),” says Jarson.
