Neutra’s Millard Kaufman House Is Restored and Ready for Sale

realtor.com

This fantastic dwelling was built in 1949 for screenwriter and Mr. Magoo co-creator Millard Kaufman. However, its famous first owner is the least of this midcentury modern stunner’s myriad virtues.

At the top of the list would be the fact that three renowned architects worked on the stunning home: Richard Neutra, Alexander Ban, and Josef Van der Kar. Though the trio worked on the home, it bears the name of the man who commissioned it.

Located in Los Angeles, the Kaufman house is now on the market for $3.4 million. In the Hollywood Hills, between Mulholland Drive and the 101 freeway, the home sits in a neighborhood filled with other famed midcentury modern homes. There’s a Rudolph Schindler on one side, a John Lautner on the other, and a handful of Buff & Hensmans sprinkled around the neighborhood, according to Curbed.

The current homeowner, who reportedly purchased the property in 2016 for $2,325,000, renovated the kitchen and bathrooms, redid the wood floor and large deck, and added new fixtures throughout.

But the home’s signature wood built-ins remain.

The master bedroom now features a walk-in closet (uncommon for houses of this vintage), as well as a spacious, light-filled, refinished double bath.

One element that’s remained constant over the years? The structure itself.

According to the listing, this home is “post-and-beam to the extreme.” It has lofted and beamed ceilings of exposed wood, skylights, soaring walls of windows and glass doors, and original paneling. Everything within has been polished and primed.

There are views of the luxurious landscaping—originally done by landscape architect Garrett Eckbo—from almost every room. Outside, there’s a beach-entry pool, patio with fire pit, and lush lawn.

In all, there are four bedrooms, three baths, and 2,503 square feet of living space—but those are just numbers. This home’s real story lies in its architectural pedigree and its exquisite and artistic restoration.
