Playwright Edward Albee’s Hamptons Home on the Market for $20M

The Montauk, NY, home owned by the playwright Edward Albee has hit the market for $20 million.

“It was his summer place,” says listing agent Paul Brennan of Douglas Elliman. “The location is superb.”

Albee, who famously penned “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” bought the summer beach house in 1964. Albee died in 2016, and his home is now on the market for the first time in over 50 years.

“He was quite a fixture in Montauk. Everybody knew him,” says Brennan. Once a sleepy fishing village, Montauk has become an upscale summer hot spot. The home is located next door to the Ralph Lauren store in town, Brennan adds.

The 2.8-acre property includes 200 feet of ocean frontage, a main house, guesthouse, pool house, pool, and tennis court. The 2,900-square-foot main house has four bedrooms, three baths, and two half-baths. There’s also a white kitchen, an office, a formal dining room, and a living room with sliding glass doors.

Though the home is priced at the top of the Montauk market (with a current median list price of $1.7 million), the sale will benefit the Edward Albee Foundation, which supports writers and artists through a residency program.
