Former MLB star Jose Contreras is walking away from his Alva, FL, home, which is on the market for $2 million. The pitcher bought the 3-acre parcel with a 6,500-square-foot home in 2008 for $1.8 million, according to property records.
The 46-year-old had his start playing with the Cuban national team and in the Cuban National Series, before defecting to the United States in 2002 and signing with the New York Yankees. In 2004 he was traded to the Chicago White Sox (with whom he won the World Series in 2005), and it was during his time with the Sox that he purchased this off-season vacation home.
The hurler’s retreat is a real catch. Built in 1999, the “charming estate” is located along the banks of the Caloosahatchee River. The property comes with a private dock with boatlift, 200 feet of river frontage, and access to the Gulf of Mexico.

Even if you don’t want to get wet, there are plenty of ways to relax. The home has a master suite, four guest suites, and in-law quarters with separate entrance. In addition, there’s a great room, eat-in kitchen with two refrigerators, formal dining room, office, theater, game room (currently decorated with sports memorabilia), and gym.
The living room opens to a lanai and pool, plus an outdoor kitchen, fireplace, and gazebo. The landscaped grounds are surrounded by large oaks, Spanish moss, fruit trees, and a decorative pond.
Contreras’ 11-year-career in the MLB also included stints with the Colorado Rockies, Philadelphia Phillies, and Pittsburgh Pirates. Most recently, the former All-Star has rejoined the White Sox as an ambassador, assisting Latin-born players in adjusting to their new lives in the U.S., as he did.
