Here’s a hopeful ending to a sad tale. The infamous house once owned by New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez has finally sold for the discounted price of $1 million, according to the Boston Herald.

The long-vacant North Attleboro, MA, mansion in Westwood Estates had languished on the market since 2016, when it went looking for a buyer with its owner in prison on a murder conviction. Yvonne Thompson of Keller Williams had the listing.

Buyers stayed away from the property, which had a role of its own in the murder trial.

Prosecutors claimed that grainy surveillance video footage taken from inside the house showed Hernandez holding what appeared to be the weapon used in the murder of Odin Lloyd. (The sister of Hernandez’s fiancee was dating Lloyd at the time.)

While serving a life sentence for murder, Hernandez committed suicide in prison in April 2017. The news led to renewed interest in his former home, and it was the most-viewed property on realtor.com® in May. In June, the price dropped from $1.5 million to $1.3 million.

The house had become a headache. With the late football star in debt, and his estate facing multiple lawsuits, the discounted price was certainly worth one less worry.

According to the Herald, Arif Khan, a real estate investor and Patriots fan, picked up the home and plans to spiff up the place, as well as its reputation.

“Nobody wants to buy a house with Aaron Hernandez’s name on it, but I feel a name change and a little upgrade on the property will increase its value,” said Khan, who estimated he will spend $150,000 in repairs. “It was honestly in pretty bad condition. There were doors broken down, I assume by the police. There was also a big water leak in the garage. The garage has to be gutted.”

“At a million bucks, if Khan is buying Hernandez’s home as a primary residence, it doesn’t seem like such a bad buy. It’s a great neighborhood, which certainly has some of North Attleboro’s most expensive homes,” says Boston-area real estate agent and writer David Bates.

“A review of North Attleboro public records reveals that Patriots have been the buyers of six of the 12 million-dollar, single-family sales in that market,” Bates adds. “So in a quick resell situation, his best bet might be to find another Patriot to buy the home with presumably fixed doors, a newly renovated garage, and recently lifted the curse.”

May we also suggest a sage ceremony? Still, there are plenty of nice features in the five-bedroom, 7,100-square-foot home.

It boasts a two-story balcony overlooking the family room and foyer, a master suite with private balcony and gas fireplace, a custom kitchen, pool and cabana, and a finished basement with theater room and ice bath.

The new owner will certainly give the home, and its history, a fresh start.
