Decades later Blatty fiddled with the tale—the child in his telling became a 12-year-old girl—and turned it into a best-seller. The screen version, released in 1972, became a blockbuster horror film that won Blatty an Oscar for his screenplay adaptation and catapulted actress Linda Blair to stardom for her memorable role as the possessed child.
