5 Shockers About the Property Brothers That’ll Make Your Jaw Drop

As if the “Property Brothers” stars Jonathan and Drew Scott weren’t busy enough training for “Dancing With the Stars,” wrapping up wedding plans, and helping clients on their many HGTV shows, the twins have also just released a memoir, “It Takes Two: Our Story.”

And this book truly was a team effort! Jonathan and Drew swapped writing chapters, then scribbled notes in each other’s margins just so no one hogged the spotlight. For added perspective, chapters were also written by their parents, Joanne and James, and older brother JD.

This book follows their 2016 best-seller, “Dream Home: The Property Brothers’ Ultimate Guide to Finding & Fixing Your Perfect House.” It covers the period from their childhood to their rise to reality TV stardom—and dishes plenty of new juicy details. Here are some revelations you’ll be surprised to hear.

1. Jonathan could have made it as a magician

“At 16, I won 3rd Best Stage Performer in the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians magic competition,” Jonathan wrote. “That’s right: I was officially an Olympian of magic. Well, in my head, at least. I had also gained some local recognition with appearances on morning talk shows. I grew my hair out and started wearing a puffy leather bomber jacket and fitted black jeans like David Copperfield.”

Eventually, Jonathan had amassed “the skills, custom illusions, and props to book gigs at small venues or clubs and even hired a few professional dancers to join me onstage.” And yet, “all efforts to recruit Drew as my assistant failed.” (In response, Drew wrote in the margins, “Let’s see: Play basketball with the guys or get locked inside a trunk alone, wearing a sparkly bodysuit? I’ve had tougher decisions.”)

2. They had celebrity crushes

Drew confessed, “My celebrity crushes were Tiffani-Amber Thiessen from ‘Saved by the Bell’ and Sporty Spice. Jonathan leaned more toward Christina Applegate or Tyra Banks, whose posters he kept hidden in his room on the back of his closet door.”

3. They share a ‘secret language of twins’

The Scott parents swear that as toddlers, Jonathan and Drew shared toys through a secret language of hand signals before they could speak. They showed no hints of tantrums or rivalry, but that all changed when the twins reached age 6. They entered a karate tournament and ended up combating each other—which unleashed a competitive streak that’s still going strong today.

Of the many fan questions they receive, the parents say, “the most common one is whether they always got along so well,” they wrote. “That answer is easy: Drew and Jonathan were best friends from the beginning and had a knack for working out differences so they could quickly get back to more important agendas of work or play. Their secret language of twins became unspoken.”

4. They got their first job at the wee age of 7

When Jonathan and Drew turned 7, their dad sat them down and announced, “It’s time to get a job.” After racking their brains over what they could do that someone would pay them for, the boys came up with selling handmade clothes hangers.

“Our parents gave us a list of family and friends we could try selling our hangers to and gave us permission to sell door-to-door as well,” Drew wrote. “We worked up a sales pitch and tag-teamed everyone with the charm offensive. The trick was to keep the patter going back and forth between the two of us so no one had the chance to interrupt and say no.”

5. Brother JD was their first home renovation client

“Anyone who has been an older sibling knows there are many different levels to that position,” wrote JD in his own chapter. “Sometimes you are a teacher, sometimes you are a friend, and other times your job is simply to give them a hard time.”

Clearly this big brother did his part in helping shape Jonathan and Drew’s careers.

“Here is a little germ of information not everyone knows: I was actually their first renovation/design client,” JD wrote. “In filming a sizzle video for a new show called ‘Rock Your Garage,’ my brothers needed to make over a room in 24 hours to highlight their skills. They chose my living room for that project, which ultimately led to the shows you see today.”
