A bedroom is a sanctuary of sorts—a place for resting, recharging, and, depending on your love life, revving things up once in a while. So, it’s understandable that you’d want your boudoir decor to make a statement and for it to reflect your personal taste. But while design is very much subjective, some people’s choices objectively baffle the senses.
Want proof? We’ve rounded up some of the craziest bedroom designs on Instagram—and we have to say sweet dreams most certainly are not made of these. In fact, some of them may be nightmare-inducing. They do, however, leave us with some good takeaways about how not to decorate a bedroom.
1. Don’t think too far out of the box (springs)View this post on InstagramRise and Shine! Time for some tetanus.

We applaud creativity, but can you imagine hitting your head on this in the middle of the night? As commenter michelmdom says, “Think of the rust in your eyes in the morning.”
Anything you hang overhead should be practical and, preferably, something that won’t terrify if you wake in the middle of the night.
2. Consider the creep factorView this post on InstagramTell me about everything that terrifies you. Now let’s build a bed out of all those things.

Speaking of terrifying: Angels + clowns = a room we wouldn’t sleep a wink in if you paid us. As squirrelparade says, “It’s like sleeping in a grave.”
3. Remember, bigger isn’t always betterWe’re not even sure where to begin with this big bed/couch that’s large enough for a co-sleeping family of 20. It’s confusing at best. Elenewithane writes, “Where do you sleep? Which bit??? I don’t get it.”
4. This takes modern farmhouse decor too farView this post on InstagramA post shared by Room Smells (@room_smells) on Jan 30, 2019 at 6:20am PST
A popular home decor tip is to bring some of the outdoors inside for a natural, earthy touch. This room takes that too far by at least a nose. On the upside—when you leave a door open and someone asks you if you live in a barn, you can honestly answer yes.
5. Make the tufted callsView this post on InstagramA post shared by Joseph Paul Davis (@josephpauldavis) on Nov 18, 2018 at 8:50am PST
We love a good tufted sofa or headboard, but tufted walls are tough to handle. And the yellow just puts them right over the top.
6. Less is moreView this post on Instagram"…and your punishment is to spend eternity in this room. Enjoy!" #uglyroom #badpostcards #hell #70s

The flowers, the curtains, the carpet, oh my! Talk about sensory overload. We need allergy meds just looking at this.
7. Open concept isn’t always a good conceptView this post on InstagramI see you saggy pantyhose doubling as sunken bathtub privacy drapes.

It’s kind of like the carpet is one big bath mat, and the ceiling mirror is the icing on the cake. Commenter styleitkosher sums it up pretty well, “Wait. What. Why. Why. What. Why??????????”
8. You don’t have to use extra wallpaper on the ceilingView this post on InstagramGuess they had some extra wallpaper border

Where was the border patrol here? While wallpaper is back in style these days, this look has never been in nor, god willing, will it ever be. Commenter mskris67 muses, “The store refused to take it back … so they didn’t want to waste it. Lol.” Still, no excuse.
9. If something seems fishy, it probably isIf you’re questioning an unusual design choice, it’s always a good idea to get a second opinion— especially if it involves a fish-filled headboard. Comments on this one are quite amusing. Commenter on.four.legs describes it as “what gangsters really mean by ‘sleeping with the fishes.'”
10. Just say no to bloody decorView this post on InstagramA post shared by melissa (@itsalive.designs) on Jul 18, 2017 at 6:28pm PDT
Want guaranteed nightmares? This duvet set has you covered. Not everyone will run screaming from it, though, as somehow this bedding has racked up dozens of likes. And hey, if their sweet dreams are made of this, then who are we to disagree?
