Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent’s Historic Hancock Park Mansion on Market for $13.8M

Some homes serve as magnets for successful creative types. Take the Hancock Park mansion recently put on the market by celebrity design team Jeremiah Brent and Nate Berkus of TLC reality show “Nate and Jeremiah by Design.”

The couple are asking $13.8 million for the place they purchased two years ago from award-winning TV producer Marta Kauffman, co-creator of “Friends.”

Kauffman and her then-husband had purchased the 8,477-square-foot, Mediterranean-style mansion in 1997 for just under $1.47 million.

Around the time her marriage crumbled, Kauffman was ready to split from the manse. In an off-market deal, the couple sold their home to Brent and Berkus for $8,185,000.

“We were lucky that the house was in great condition. It had been looked after. All we really needed to do was give it a cosmetic makeover, the perfect assignment for two decorators,” Berkus told Architectural Digest.

But their “cosmetic makeover” involved much more than just splashing on a little paint and polishing the floors, hence the $5.5 million price hike.

Brent and Berkus “meticulously updated” the place inside and out. According to the listing, they “retained its soul but thoroughly brought it up to today’s standards in design and functionality.”

The home was built by the AD Chisholm Co. for financier E.S. Rowley in 1928. Since the home is in a historical district, the facade must remain intact.

But out back, everything has been either updated or redesigned. The outdoor space features a dining pavilion, pool with auto cover, koi/turtle pond, fireplace, kitchen with barbecue and appliances, and organic gardens.

There’s also a separate guesthouse with two bedrooms, as well as a pottery room and three parking garages.

The main house features living and dining rooms, a family/screening room, library, junior dining room, kitchen, great room, and double powder rooms.

Upstairs, you’ll find five recently redesigned bedrooms, including a master retreat with a fireplace, double walk-in closets, luxurious bath, and large terrace overlooking the rear gardens.

In total, there are six bedrooms and seven bathrooms.

When Berkus and Brent first bought the home, they intended to stay—especially when they saw the 200-year-old oak tree in the backyard.

“We pictured Poppy, and eventually the rest of our family, playing under that tree, and we thought this was a place we could put down roots,” Brent told Architectural Digest. In addition to daughter Poppy, their family now includes son Oskar.

We’re not sure why they decided to sell the home they worked so diligently to redesign and restore, but one thing is certain: The next buyer will acquire one remarkable home with a design pedigree.
