NASCAR’s Casey Mears just purchased a lovely home in the heart of Scottsdale, AZ, for $2.2 million. The property is an extraordinary remodel project from local design-build group Modern Nest.
Once Mears saw the completed project, says listing agent Nicholas Carlson, he left another home he was interested in in his rear-view mirror and made an all-cash offer for this place on the spot.
What makes the place so special? A careful attention to detail and a willingness to step outside the predictable to create something unique, Carlson says.
Carlson and his Modern Nest partners, builder Brendan Bader and his wife, designer Jilly Bader, had their eye on the home for some time. They saw its potential, so when it hit the market a few years ago, they grabbed it.
Originally built in 1964, the brick ranch was largely demolished by the team, except for the garage and a few walls. However, they kept the most striking feature of the house: a wooden, territorial gate at the property’s entrance, which served as the inspiration for the rest of the build, according to Carlson.

Behind the gate now sits a five-bedroom, five-bathroom home with soft white walls and wood accents. The Southwest-modern masterpiece is stylish and comfortable for family living. The home sits on nearly an acre in the coveted Cactus Corridor section of Scottsdale.

In addition to the home’s design touches, the furnishings, supplied largely by local retailer Potato Barn, were available for purchase at a discount along with the home.
This is the first year in many that Mears has sat out the NASCAR season, which left him with plenty of time for a move. After burning rubber to buy the place on the spot, he and his wife, Trisha, and their two kids, Samantha and Hayden, made the move into their new abode.
Of course Mears will still make a few adjustments to the home to put his own stamp on it. Carlson, who lives just a few doors down from the property, says Mears will be expanding the garage to accommodate his cars. And now that Carlson has nabbed a new high-profile neighbor, he says he’s looking forward to seeing him around more often.
“I’ll definitely be stopping by for a beer,” he said.
