PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel scored another payday with the sale of his luxurious home in San Francisco for $7.4 million, according to SocketSite.
The billionaire investor didn’t fare as well as he’d hoped on the property. The posh estate is a combination of two addresses, resulting in a large five-bedroom, six-bathroom home. It initially went on the market in 2016 for $9.25 million, with the price dropping to $8 million later that year.
The 51-year-old had purchased the home—located in the upscale Marina District—for $6.5 million in 2010. He then embarked on a major renovation with Remick Architects and Master Builders.

The three-story custom home has been updated throughout, and features close-up views of two iconic landmarks, the Palace of Fine Arts and the Golden Gate Bridge. The living room has French doors that open to a patio with a built-in barbecue, perfect for outdoor entertaining. The chef’s kitchen includes a separate entry that opens to the family room.
The layout includes two master suites, a library, penthouse lounge, and roof deck. The lower level contains an additional bedroom suite, and French doors that open to a garden. The home is close to the Presidio, Chrissy Field, the St. Francis Yacht Club, as well as bars, restaurants, and boutiques in the popular neighborhood.
Thiel co-founded PayPal, which was sold to eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002. An early backer of Facebook, he also co-founded Palantir Technologies and Founders Fund. The libertarian also financed the lawsuit of Hulk Hogan (Terry Bollea) against the gossip site Gawker, leading to its bankruptcy.
