The historic Virginia home that Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee grew up in hit the market this week for $8.5 million.
The Lee family rented the six-bedroom, six-bathroom residence when the future Southern general was just 5 years old in what’s now the Old Town section of Arlington. The family lived there from 1812 until 1825, when Lee went off to the U.S. Military Academy. The home’s other claim to fame is that President George Washington also dined and lodged there before the Lee family moved in.
Built in 1795, the brick house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
Lee is a contentious figure for many Americans: The former leader of the Confederate States Army remains a hero to some and a defender of slavery for many others. Recently, the removal of statues of the general in cities such as Charlottesville, VA, New Orleans, and Dallas have sparked controversies.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire a historic, period house that has been completely rebuilt and reconstructed,” says Robert Hryniewicki, a real estate agent with HRL Partners at Washington Fine Properties. The Washington, DC–based firm is listing the 8,000-square-foot home, which sits on a half-acre and includes a two-car garage.
“It is, in our opinion, the crown jewel of Old Town Alexandria,” says Hryniewicki.
The home had been used as a residence until 1966. The Stonewall Jackson Memorial Foundation purchased the home and opened it to the public. Unable to make ends meet, the foundation sold the home in 2000 to Mark and Ann Kington for $2.5 million.
The Kingtons restored the interior, putting in new bathrooms and kitchen. The couple, who raised their family in the home, are downsizing now that their children have grown, says Hryniewicki.

The home features high ceilings, which are up to 13 feet in the entry hall, living and dining rooms, and large rooms. The home is also located in an urban, walkable community near restaurants and grocery stores.
Although buyers can make cosmetic changes to the interior, they won’t be able to make any major alterations as the home has a historic designation.
It is currently the highest-priced residence on the market in Alexandria.
“When it trades it will be the highest sale in Old Town,” Hryniewicki says.
President George Washington also stayed in this home before the Lee family moved in.
