Crown Manor is an oceanfront mansion just outside San Diego in the peninsula town of Coronado. The 11-bedroom, 17.5-bath property was built in 1902 by the architecture team of William Sterling Hebbard and Irving John Gill. It’s now on the market for $25 million.
Commissioned by banker-turned-rancher Bartlett Richards and his wife, Inez, the 22,997-square-foot home’s Tudor Revival hallmarks would have stood out from the nearby Queen Anne Victorians at the time as a particularly modern and fashionable choice.
“Gill’s 10-year partnership with William Hebbard produced a number of eclectic residences inspired by English design,” writes Gill scholar Bruce Kammerling. “The Bartlett Richards house in Coronado (1902) with its high-pitched roof, brick walls and half-timbered gables is an excellent example.”
In 1914, homeowner Agnes Burnham added a south and east wing to house the staff.
“The house is on national and local historic registries,” explains listing agent Christine Baker Willis.
The stunning mansion boasts a formal living room, billiard room, music room, salon with gold-leaf ceiling, formal dining room, hunt room with themed murals, and commercial kitchen with butler’s pantry.

The second floor holds the master suite and dressing room, nine more bedrooms, a library, theater, family area, and several bathrooms. The third floor features a salon and massage space, sauna, private office, and guest bedroom.
According to San Diego Magazine, the mansion was purchased in the early ’70s for a mind-blowing $375,000 by Greg McPartlin, a former Navy SEAL and owner of local watering hole McP’s. But its most famous owner was likely real estate mogul and Democratic political booster Larry Lawrence.
Owner of the nearby Hotel del Coronado, Lawrence is the one who dubbed the house Crown Manor. He housed Bill and Hillary Clinton at Crown Manor on at least two occasions. In the ’90s, Arianna Huffington reported rumors about a Hillary-less Bill spending the night in Crown Manor with Lawrence’s wife at the time, Sheila, a charge both have vehemently denied. A libel suit was later settled out of court.
Gossip aside, Crown Manor is a gorgeously preserved mansion with killer ocean views and beautiful grounds. The three formal courtyards are home to over 130 species of plants.
