You might be shocked when you take a look at the recently listed Maryland mansion owned by William Peter Blatty, author of the best-selling 1971 horror fiction “The Exorcist.” The $3.2 million home is located just a few miles from Georgetown, the Washington, DC, neighborhood where Blatty set his novel.
Built in 1988, the six-bedroom, five-bath home was designed in the French Provincial style and sits on a half-acre lot in the exclusive Burning Tree section of Bethesda, MD. The exterior features a circular drive, fountain, floor-to-ceiling casement windows, and a double front doors.
The two-story foyer features a double staircase and leads to embassy-size public rooms and a family room with a huge fireplace.

There’s an indoor pool with electric cover, master suite with his-and-her baths, and a third floor with a guest suite and recreation room.
Blatty, who died in January at age 89, was a senior at nearby Georgetown University in 1949 when he heard the story of a 14-year-old boy who appeared to be possessed by the devil and received exorcisms to expel the demon.
Decades later Blatty fiddled with the tale—the child in his telling became a 12-year-old girl—and turned it into a best-seller. The screen version, released in 1972, became a blockbuster horror film that won Blatty an Oscar for his screenplay adaptation and catapulted actress Linda Blair to stardom for her memorable role as the possessed child.
