Prolific and opinionated sports columnist Mike Lupica is selling a five-bedroom mansion in tony New Canaan, CT, for $2.45 million.

That’s a relative steal for New Canaan, which currently has nearly two dozen homes on the market priced above $5 million. The town consistently ranks among the most wealthy in the nation.

Lupica picked up the 4,493-square-foot, 1940s-era Colonial-style home in 2010 for $2.3 million. The 3.3-acre property has double gates that swing open to reveal a circular driveway.

The clapboard and stone home is classic and unpretentious. The lower level has a stone and tile sunroom adjacent to the dining room, kitchen, and living room. An L-shaped breakfast island anchors the kitchen, which includes a double-door, stainless-steel refrigerator and other high-end appliances.

In the living room there are built-in bookcases and french doors that open to the stone patio and a view of the backyard cottage. The home’s master bedroom has a sitting area with fireplace, master bath, and walk-in closet. The home’s walk-out lower level features a rec room (with a “Star Wars” pinball machine), full bathroom, and bedroom/office.

A garden path leads to the cottage that’s Lupica’s writing studio with built-in bookcases. Outside, up a few stone steps, is the gated pool, spa, and waterfall.

Lupica, 65, rose to prominence at the New York Daily News, which he joined as a columnist in his 20s. He’s written more than 40 books, including fiction and young-adult novels.

For years, he appeared on ESPN’s “The Sports Reporters,” offering his thoughts on sports-related subjects and closed the show with a parting shot of opinion. The show was canceled earlier this year, and Page Six reported Lupica was partly behind the program’s demise. The prolific author recently revived the show as a podcast.
