The home of former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez continues to sit vacant a year after it hit the market in North Attleboro, MA.

It certainly hasn’t been for lack of publicity. While serving a life sentence for murder, Hernandez committed suicide in prison in April. Interest in his former home spiked as a result, and it was the most-viewed property on realtor.com® in May.

In June, the price of the home dropped from $1.5 million to $1.3 million. There was news that a buyer was lined up, but the deal apparently fell through. The Boston Globe reported that the seller backed out due to the unwanted publicity surrounding the property.

Yvonne M. Thompson of Keller Williams Realty, who represents the listing, was unable to comment except to confirm that the property is still available.

So what would it take to unload this high-end but infamous home?

“I suspect the list price is the deal killer,” says Boston-area real estate agent and writer David Bates. “I think there is a price that would get buyers to run—not walk— to buy the property, and it’s just listed too high to create excitement and urgency for prospective buyers.”

Despite the recent price drop, Bates points out that the home is priced way above the median for North Attleboro, an area that “isn’t flooded with high-end buyers.”

The home’s connection to Hernandez has brought eyeballs to the listing, if not buyers. Followers of the tight-end’s sordid story might recall that the five-bedroom residence played a part in his murder trial.

Prosecutors claimed that grainy surveillance video footage taken from inside the house showed Hernandez holding what appeared to be the weapon used in the murder of Odin Lloyd.

The jury even toured the home, located a short distance from an industrial park where Lloyd’s body was found, according to CNN. The sister of Hernandez’s fiancee was dating Lloyd at the time.

The sale of the home is also tied up in lawsuits. The estate is named in the wrongful death lawsuit filed by Lloyd’s family. The ex-NFL player was acquitted of a drive-by shooting in Boston in 2012 that resulted in the deaths of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado. However, their families also have “attachments on the home as part of their lawsuits pending against Hernandez’s estate,” according to the Globe.

Built in 2007, the home offers a second-floor balcony, home theater, spacious master suite, chef’s kitchen, and outdoor pool. The luxury property has certainly had plenty of publicity—even if the headlines have been less than desirable. But whether all the attention translates into a sale looks like it comes down to cold, hard cash.
