Inside a Beverly Hills Mansion, There’s a Gorgeous (and Ginormous!) Green Living Wall

Inspired by what he saw in restaurants and hotels, Shane Patel added a living wall to the interior of this Beverly Hills contemporary home, which is now on the market for $4.7 million.

The luxe home was built this year on what was once a vacant hillside lot. Patel—who’s also the developer and listing agent—wanted to “give an organic feel to the entryway.” A water feature or a potted plant simply wouldn’t do. So he went big and installed a living wall.

The best part of this vertical garden? The wall is actually low-maintenance, appealing to a busy homeowner who appreciates the look of lush greenery but doesn’t want to hire someone to keep it thriving.

“There’s not that much maintenance,” says Patel. Built-in misters keep the moss an emerald shade of green and prevent it from drying out.

Of course, a little bit of hands-on maintenance is even better.

“It’s best an owner takes a spray bottle of water if they really want to maintain it,” says Patel.

Patel and his business partner routinely look to the hospitality industry for design ideas, some of which they translate for residential spaces.

“Living walls are something we’ve definitely seen in restaurants,” he says.

As for the rest of the 3,951-square-foot home, which has four bedrooms and five baths, it’s definitely worthy of five stars. An open floor plan makes it well-suited for entertaining. You’ll find a built-in bar, embedded flat-screen television, and marble flooring in the living room, which opens to the kitchen. The kitchen has its own glam touch with European-lacquer cabinetry.

A floating staircase connects the home’s two levels, and the glass-walled wine rack allows for displaying a few nice bottles of Bordeaux.

A retractable wall in one of the bedrooms—which features a see-through fireplace—opens to the yard. In the outdoor space, three more living walls are framed, like gorgeous green art.

A free-standing tub crafted from Carrara marble within a room-size shower in the master suite is an artful touch, and the home also includes a sauna. The walk-in closet—very spacious, with custom built-ins—is perfect for any fashionista.

The home is designed as a showpiece for a homeowner who loves to have friends over.

“This is definitely an entertainment-friendly house,” says Patel. “It’s pretty much a bachelor pad. Some of the finishes are pretty flashy. It’s probably not a family home.”

Patel thinks the person who scoops this home up could use it as a party-friendly second home that’s also close to hot spots in Beverly Hills. Just don’t forget to buy a spray bottle before moving in.
