The hype surrounding the release of “A Star Is Born,” Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper‘s remake of the classic film, has reached a fever pitch. The movie—rhapsodically embraced at the Venice and Toronto film festivals—has been a series of firsts, including Cooper’s directorial debut and Gaga’s first leading role. And the place the two stars sealed the deal? That would be Gaga’s sprawling $22.5 million Malibu estate she lovingly calls her “gypsy palace.”
After seeing Gaga perform “La Vie en Rose” in 2016 at a benefit held in Sean Parker‘s backyard in Los Angeles, Cooper (who had already signed on to direct and star in the film) knew he’d found his leading lady. So he set up a meeting with Gaga the next day, and she welcomed him into her beachside estate.
“She came down the stairs and we went out to her patio and I saw her eyes, and honestly, it clicked and I went, Wow,” Cooper told Vogue. He pretty much offered her the part on the spot.
Gaga was equally taken with Cooper during their first encounter. “The second that I saw him, I was, like, Have I known you my whole life? It was an instant connection, instant understanding of one another.”
After learning of their fateful meeting, we knew we had to seek out Gaga’s palace to see where the magic began.

Gaga purchased the 10,000-square-foot home in September 2014, and it was featured in “Gaga: Five Foot Two,” the Netflix documentary that followed the star as she finished up her latest album and prepared to perform at the Super Bowl. The kitchen, featured prominently in the doc, is a beauty.

Three-bedroom palaceWe’re used to seeing many bedrooms in a mansion this big, but Gaga’s Malibu home has only three. Several bedrooms were converted into dressing and storage spaces for her wardrobe, according to Vogue. Her collection includes custom designs by Alexander McQueen and Gianni Versace, and an entire chamber is devoted to her leather, feather, and black garments.
There’s also a refrigerator in her wardrobe suite, but we’re guessing that it’s not used to hold her infamous meat dress from the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.
As for the master suite, it’s almost a home unto itself with two fireplaces, a private terrace, two bathrooms, and, naturally, more closet space.

‘Gypsy palace’ with a bowling alleyGaga purchased the mansion from Dan Romanelli, the founder of the consumer products division of Warner Bros. Romanelli, who had developed merchandise for the studio’s “Batman” franchise, was inspired to add a Batcave-like lair inside the home he built in 2005. Accessed through a secret door and passageway from the living room, the subterranean suite includes an 800-bottle wine cellar, home theater with a bar, and—most striking of all—a two-lane bowling alley!

For all the tumult and excitement that come with promoting a movie (and just being Gaga), it must be nice to know that the sight and sound of the crashing waves will always be waiting at home. Hopefully she’ll get a little time to relax before having to glam up for awards season again.
