The Ten Thousand Building
Ten Thousand, a new 40-story luxury rental in Los Angeles, will offer amenities high rollers have come to expect. There will be 24-hour doormen, a lifestyle concierge, dog walkers, a fleet of cars with private drivers, and a delivery service robot. Wait, what?!
Yes, a robot will be at your service for the first time in a residential building. Developed by the company Savioke, the building’s autonomous Relay delivery robot could pass for a slimmed-down version of R2-D2. Thin is always in when it comes to Southern California.
Nicknamed “Charley,” the robot is programmed to arrive at a resident’s door day or night to fulfill requests, from package deliveries, to snacks, to a bottle of wine.
“The robot will take you anything you want: a toothbrush, Evian, a soda,” says Roman Speron, vice president of Crescent Heights, the developer of the building, which is scheduled to open in January.

Speron adds that the robot has a 99%-plus accuracy rate—which is more than we can say for our typical Seamless order—and it takes only about 5 minutes to complete requests.
“It provides a better service,” he says. “And it’s fun.” Fun might be pushing it, but we’ll wager this robot is easier to deal with than a grumpy bellhop with his hand out.
As for logistics, residents will be able to order delivery items on an iPad they receive upon move-in. A team of human butlers will process the requests and place the items inside Charley’s secure interior compartment for delivery.
The entire building, including the elevator has been mapped for Charley to navigate. The resident is alerted once the robot arrives. When the apartment door is opened, so is Charley’s compartment for you to collect your goodies.

The building’s other high-tech perks include an app that lets tenants schedule a personal training session, reserve a private dining room, request their car, or pay rent, among other tasks. Residents can also use the tablet to manage their in-unit temperature and lighting.
The building also features “beacon” technology, which tracks residents’ patterns (e.g., the temperature they prefer for their car, or how they take their coffee) so that building staff can anticipate their needs and requests.
Are these awesome amenities, or Big Brother looming large? Maybe a mix of both. Speron argues that this is what you’ve come to expect from, say, a boutique hotel where everyone knows your name.
“That’s been in existence for 40 years,” he says. “This is just taking that and improving upon it.”
Outdoor heated pool: No robots. Yet.Ten Thousand
The posh building, located on the border of Beverly Hills, offers two- and three-bedroom apartments. There are 75,000 square feet of amenities, including a fitness center, spa, indoor lap pool with underwater speakers, outdoor heated pool, tennis court, and 1-acre park with outdoor kitchen and dog run. Rents begin at $9,500 a month. No one ever said the future would be cheap.
