10 of the Wackiest Roommate Wanted Ads, Ever

pbs.com

Let’s be honest: Finding a roommate can be a giant headache. In a best-case scenario, you’ll end up living with someone who becomes your BFF; worst case, you’ll end up signing a lease with an epic weirdo.

For anyone with a horrible roommate story, the warning signs typically started to show after you moved in—not from first glance at the roommate wanted ad. But in the case of the nutty ads below, the renters showed their true colors from the get-go.

Take a look at some of the most outlandish roommate wanted ads we’ve ever seen posted. If reading this doesn’t make you happy that you live alone (or at least with a levelheaded roommate), we don’t know what will.

‘Steeler fans only’ Know how many Super Bowls the Steelers have won? You'd better if you want to live here!Know how many Super Bowls the Steelers have won? You’d better if you want to live here.

pbs.com

Baltimore Ravens fans need not apply. This ad, posted in 2016 by avid Pittsburgh Steelers fans named “John” and “Scott” in Sharpsburg, PA, spelled out exactly the type of roommate they’re looking for.

At the time the ad was posted, it caught the attention of Rolling Stone reporter Scott Rafferty. The flyer is “awesome, even if it probably breaks some kind of anti-discrimination law,” Rafferty noted.

Living in the loo So, just where will you and your air mattress go with your roomie is using the can?Exactly where will you and your air mattress go when your roomie is using the can?

craigslist.org

A $400 living situation in New York City’s East Village sounds like the ultimate sublet, but scan the details and you’ll realize it may be the lowest form of slumlord-ing known to man.

This listing, which appeared on Craigslist in November 2008, indicates that the renter of the bathroom—and the renter’s guests—are confined to the room unless the “female” in her “mid 60s” needs to use the loo. For that reason alone, we’d have to imagine that she remained the lone occupant.

Hog heaven?

Do you dig the pigs?

Who doesn't want to be bullied by a boar in their own home?Who doesn’t want to be bullied by a boar in their own home?

https://ift.tt/luOhr9

Honesty is the best policy when it comes to talking about pets, no matter if it’s a dog, cat, or potbellied pig. This ad, posted on Craigslist in January 2013, says the place is occupied by not one but two porkers.

Before you succumb to their cuteness, you might want to remember they’re “herd animals.” And as you read on, you’ll learn Franklin, the elder pig, “will bully you.” It also seems fair to say that you will not be allowed to consume bacon in this crib. Don’t expect to get a spot on that couch either!

Must love nature

Even with the "guaranteed life lessons" this still feel like a "no thanks, I'll pass" situation.

Is "driven" a common quality of someone willing to live in a tent? The tent where you can rough it with two other roommates for $200 a month.

https://ift.tt/luOhr9

San Francisco has been the most expensive city to rent in for a while now, so residents have had to get creative with their living situations. Case in point: this ad for a roommate to rent one-third of a tent for $50 a week, which appeared on Craigslist in September 2015.

The original posters say the “tent moves locations throughout the week to keep fresh,” and while that change of scenery may be nice, the idea of living in 15 square feet of space sounds like … a challenge.

Points for creativity If she's this creative, imagine what your holiday decor will look like? If she’s this creative, imagine what your holiday decor will look like.

visualnews.com

This is one way to stand out in the rental market! If you’re charmed by the creativity of this post and not turned off by the over-the-top self-promotion, Lauren might be the roommate for you. And with all those testimonials, who wouldn’t want to live with Lauren, right? Seriously, she had us at mac and cheese.

We’re sure she had tons of inquiries and not just about that “Ironic Naked Man” in the lower right-hand corner. This ad generated so much buzz that it appeared in HuffPost and Visual News in October 2013. Both publications praised the graphic designer for her creativity and cleverness.

———

‘The hive is located in the living room’ You're cool with potential for these bees to become enraged, right? You’re not allergic to bees, right?

https://ift.tt/luOhr9

Forgive us for being daft, but isn’t beekeeping typically an outdoor activity? Is it really wise to maintain a “rather large hive of Africanized honey bees” in the living room?

According to this ad, posted to Craigslist in June 2003 for a room in an East Village apartment, “occasionally something sets [the bees] off and hive [sic] becomes enraged and tends to swarm.” Sounds awesome!

But even if sharing your life with a swarm of bees doesn’t sound so bad, don’t even think about bringing your “large collection of predatory insects” along.

———

‘I just want your rent money’ Betcha can't wait for the CIA-level background check!CIA-level background check is included with rent.

craigslist.org

This ad is a joke, right? Aside from copping to his or her impossibly high standards, the original poster basically admits that your security deposit (“three times the amount anyone could describe as reasonable”) won’t be returned, whether you like it or not.

This ad, placed on Craigslist in January 2009, is either proof that the internet is a very dark place or that people will do anything to try to go viral.

It’s hard to believe the apartment, with its “magic sheet,” had been posted for six weeks with no bites.

One-of-a-Kind Modernist Marvel Truly Shines in Studio City

realtor.com

One thing is certain about this modernist marvel in L.A.’s Studio City: There’s nothing else like it in the world.

The one-bedroom, two-bath home comes with an unwieldy moniker—”The Lois and Roger Kennedy Studio/Residence #3″—and it’s now available for the first time in over 30 years, for $1.9 million.

It’s the third of only three private residences Roger Kennedy designed—all for himself and his wife, Lois. Each one is considered “iconic … adding important new vocabularies to the language of modernist design,” according to listing agent Crosby Doe, owner of ArchitectureforSale.com.

Doe, who’s been selling architecturally significant properties for 45 years, actually lived in one of the three residences Kennedy designed.

“Living in one was a wonderful experience. It’s quite magical,” Doe says. “Everyday you wake up and feel like you’re in a special space.”

So what makes the home so special? “Every inch is given meticulous consideration,” Doe explains. “Kennedy has said that his designs are meant to last for 200 years.”

This 2,003-square-foot home features brick walls, open spaces, soaring ceilings, skylights, and large windows, all of which provide a surprisingly light and airy ambiance.

It’s an inspiring space for architecture aficionados.

“We realize it’s very user-specific,” says Doe. “As with all remarkable properties of this nature, they’re not for everybody. But for the right person, they’ll probably never move.”

DJ Khaled Produces a Delicious Deal on a Magnificent Miami Mansion

John Parra/Getty Images

DJ Khaled was able to spin a stellar deal on a glittering Miami mansion. The home was listed for $25.9 million, but the prolific hit-maker picked it up for $21.8 million. The contemporary mansion comes with 105 feet of waterfront and a private dock on Indian Creek.

Khaled bought the property from Michael Lerner, the man behind the ubiquitous “Baby on Board” signs. Lerner told the Wall Street Journal that he put the property on the market because he’s moving to Palm Beach, FL.

Lerner had bought the estate in 2013 for $4.95 million and commenced on an extreme renovation, hiring designer Cesar Molina to oversee the interior. Molina curated exquisite wall treatments, millwork, and textiles by Holly Hunt, and furnishings from French interior designer Christian Liaigre.

Seller’s agents Eloy Carmente and Mick Duchon of Douglas Elliman and buyer’s agent Orli Rudolph of NextHome Realty Professionals declined to comment on the sale.

This Waco Home Was Built by Chip and Joanna Gaines, but It’s No Fixer-Upper

realtor.com

Even before “Fixer Upper,” Magnolia Market, and waves of Chip and Joanna Gaines–related projects, the renovation reality TV stars were busy building and flipping homes.

One of their early projects was the Magnolia Villa housing development. In 2011, the couple and their business partners bought a 6-acre parcel of land in downtown Waco, TX, and subdivided it into 36 lots.

Their plan was to build smaller homes for “empty nesters and pre-nesters,” according to Chip. The homes were designed for downsizing couples whose children have departed or buyers dipping their toes into the market before starting a family.

The couple built homes ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 square feet and in the $150,000–$200,000 price range. Buyers had 11 floor plans to choose from.

Now one of those Magnolia Villa homes has landed on the market, and we can take a peek inside.

The home’s price has jumped since it was built, and it’s now listed for $244,900. The price increase can be partly attributed to the Gaineses, who made their signature farmhouse chic style insanely popular on their hit HGTV show and raised the profile of their hometown of Waco.

Let’s see what the Gaineses were up to seven years ago. There are a couple of caveats: The home is part of a subdivision and Joanna’s expert staging skills weren’t available. But you’ll see glimpses of their signature style throughout.

The 1,652-square-foot home has three bedrooms and 2.5 baths. Joanna will tell you that the powder room makes all the difference in a small house.

In a small house, a powder room makes a huge impact.

The front door is bright red. Chip and Joanna often use neutral colors on a home’s exterior, often leaning toward gray and white. However, they always manage to add cheery and inviting pops of color somewhere. This home is no exception.

The floor plan is open, with the living room, dining area, and kitchen seamlessly merging with one another. It’s become a signature flourish of the “Fixer Upper” duo—if they’re renovating a home without an open floor plan, they give it one ASAP.

realtor.com

If they were building this home today, they’d likely lower the bar to table height for better visibility to the rest of the house. The kitchen features a walk-in pantry, and we all know that Joanna places a high premium on kitchen storage space, and strives to provide as much of it as possible.

The living room has built-in bookcases, lending a cozy Craftsman feel.

There’s a master suite with a “generous” walk-in shower. Chip and Joanna are all about adults having their own bathroom.

By the back door, there’s an area with a bench, shoe cubbies, and coat hooks. Joanna likely added this convenient farmhouse touch.

One thing the house is missing? A spacious backyard. Although the home does have a generous back deck. Older buyers may see this as a plus, as a smaller yard means less lawn care and maintenance.

With the homeowners association taking care of the front yard, you’d be hard-pressed to find an easier (or less expensive) way to live in a Gaines signature home.

After Split From Wife, Jack Osbourne Offers Up Studio City Home for Rent

Jon Kopaloff/Getty Images; realtor.com

While Jack Osbourne travels the world with his dad for their series, “Ozzy and Jack’s World Detour,” he’s renting out his Los Angeles home for $16,500 per month. It’s located in the upscale Studio City neighborhood of Colfax Meadows, a relatively quiet place where many celebs reside.

Osbourne has a checkered history in the five-bedroom, 6.5-bath home he bought in 2014. In 2017, he put the 5,614-square-foot home on the market for $3.45 million. After a month, he sliced the price to $3.2 million. Eventually Osbourne and his wife, Lisa, took it off the market.

In May, shortly after Lisa gave birth to their third daughter, the couple announced they were undergoing a friendly breakup. They were, according to Osbourne, “confident that we will be able to continue our relationship as co-parents and best friends.”

Osbourne moved out while his wife and daughters stayed in the home. In August, according to TMZ, he returned to the home and got into an argument with Lisa and her new boyfriend. A scuffle ensued and Osbourne bopped the boyfriend on the head. The police showed up, but no charges were filed against Osbourne, and he later apologized. A few weeks later, their divorce was settled. There’s no word on who got the house, but the owner is putting it up for rent without the furniture.

The house, which is being offered unfurnished, includes a formal dining room, wine room, media room, and office.

Rent Katharine McPhee’s Tony Toluca Lake Home for $6,900 a Month

Actress Katharine McPhee probably has total access to her fiancĂ© David Foster’s high-rise bachelor pad condo and recording studio, but she’s not ready to part with a pad of her own to fall back on.

Keeping her options open, McPhee is merely renting out her lovely three-bedroom, two-bath home in Toluca Lake for $6,900 a month.

McPhee tried to sell the 2,039-square foot home for $1.5 million in August 2017, but apparently thought better of it and listed the home for rent instead. She bought the place in 2015 for $1.4 million.

It’s an ideal living space for up-and-comers in the entertainment industry because of its proximity to NBC, ABC, Warner Brothers, Disney, and Universal. It’s also a quick walk to the area’s upscale restaurants and coffee shops.

The home is completely gated, for stars who need privacy from prying eyes.
