Midcentury Time Capsule: Richard Neutra’s Rados Home Is Listed for $4.1M

A Richard Neutra–designed home in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, is available for sale for the first time since it was built in 1957. It’s listed for $4.1 million.

–The Austrian-born Neutra “helped define modernism in Southern California and around the world,” the Los Angeles Conservancy asserts. The modern architect’s iconic properties include the Chuey Residence in Los Angeles and the Kaufmann House (built for the same man who commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater) in Palm Springs.

As the tale goes, the Kaufmann House, with its walls of glass and transition to the outdoors, caught the eye of shipbuilder John Rados. He asked Neutra to build him a home on a hillside from which he could look over his company, Harbor Boat Building, as well as the Port of Los Angeles. 

The final result “steps it up one notch” over other Neutra designs, according to listing agent George Penner, of Deasy Penner Podley. While Neutra subscribed to innovative technology and cost-effective materials, the Rados home incorporates a few high-end finishes. Plus, Penner notes, with 4,000 square feet of living space, it’s one of the largest Neutra homes in North America.

The two-story residence, carved into the hillside, is found down a long, private drive. The second story isn’t visible from the front entrance. Past a courtyard and into the house, visitors are greeted with the view.

“You’re struck by this incredible, explosive view out to the ocean, harbor, mountains, and beyond,” Penner says. “I’ve never seen a view quite like this in L.A. from any home.”

If you’re able to tear yourself away from the surrounding vistas, you’ll find the home pretty much as it was when it was built over six decades ago. Architectural elements include mahogany wood beams, terrazzo floors, and floor-to-ceiling windows with sliding glass doors.

The layout includes three bedrooms, four bathrooms, a living room, TV room, two dining rooms, and a downstairs family room with a full bar. The pool is accessible from multiple points in the home, which features a large deck in back. A balcony that runs the length of the home and overlooks the ocean gives the sense of being on a “luxurious modern ship,” Penner says.

Aside from an update to the master bath, the residence remains frozen in time. And the home emphasized good times, with a sunken bar, outdoor pool, and relaxed living.

“It’s the quintessential entertaining house,” Penner says.
