Mobile Trend/Facebook
Facebook feeds are awash this week in a new type of giveaway that looks pretty sweet at first glance: a free tiny house! Seriously, who wouldn’t want one of these adorable mini-abodes?
And not just one, but two giveaways are making the rounds. One, from LadyTrend, screams, “TO CELEBRATE THE LAUNCH OF OUR WEBSITE WE ARE GIVING AWAY THIS PAVILION TINY HOUSE!” The other, Mobile Trend, is giving away four houses.
For both, all you have to do to enter is share the photo, comment, and like the page. The winners will be announced on Sept. 11 (for Mobile Trend) and 15 (for LadyTrend).
It sounds easy enough, right?
This one is a scam, but real tiny-house giveaways do exist.Sorry to burst your bubble, but these “giveaways” are scams, at least according to the debunking bible Snopes.com. Why would they go through all this trouble? It’s unclear, particularly since these pages don’t appear to be selling anything, although we’d surmise all those likes and shares (Mobile Trend’s post boasts over 121,000 shares and counting since it went up on Sept. 1) must amount to some sort of social media advertising gold for someone out there.
Snopes goes on to shed light on how to spot these scams: The photos of these tiny houses are from stock agencies, which supply generic photos to be used for creative or editorial purposes (and, as a result, are unlikely to be genuinely available as prizes). Another red flag is that neither page was linked to a major company (like Home Depot or a real estate firm) that might actually hold a real tiny-house giveaway.
Is there no hope for a pint-size real estate prize? There is! Legit tiny-house giveaways actually exist.
Paint company Behr, for example, recently launched its “Dream Tiny” sweepstakes, in which it’s giving away a tiny house RV made by Tumbleweed Tiny House Co. To enter, applicants just need to visit BehrDreamTiny.com before Oct. 1, customize a virtual tiny house with their paint colors of choice, and write a short essay about why owning a tiny house would just make their year.
In other words: Start typing and dream on, wannabe tiny-home dwellers! It sure beats wasting your time on Facebook any day.
